Introduction

The Dujiangyan Irrigation System, located about 50 kilometers from Chengdu, is one of the world’s oldest continuously operating irrigation systems. Built over 2,200 years ago during the Qin Dynasty, it remains a marvel of ancient engineering.

History & Engineering

Constructed by Li Bing and his son in 256 BC, the Dujiangyan system controls the Min River and distributes water to the fertile Chengdu Plain. Unlike other ancient dams, it uses natural topography and gravity to regulate water flow without blocking the river.

Key Attractions

Yuzui: The ‘Fish Mouth’ divides the river into inner and outer channels.
Feishayan: The ‘Flying Sand Weir’ helps flush sediment from the system.
Binglangdao: The ‘Treasure Bottle Mouth’ controls the water flow into the irrigation channels.
Erwang Temple: A temple dedicated to Li Bing and his son, located on a hillside with beautiful views.
