Introduction

Drepung Monastery, located on a hillside west of Lhasa, is the largest monastery in Tibet and one of the most significant institutions in the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism.

Founded in 1416 by Tsongkhapa’s disciple Jamyang Choje, Drepung Monastery was once home to over 10,000 monks. The monastery complex features impressive architecture with whitewashed buildings and golden roofs.
