Chengdu has two airports, and knowing which one you are using is the difference between a smooth arrival and a long transfer. Tianfu International Airport handles most long-haul and many domestic services; Shuangliu is closer to the city and still serves a number of routes.

Flight searches show the airport code, and domestic itineraries sometimes mix the two. Confirm it before you book onward transport, because the transfer times are very different.
Tianfu is considerably further from the centre than Shuangliu. It is a modern, well-connected airport, but the distance is real and should be built into your arrival and departure plans.
Allow generous time between an international arrival and a domestic departure, particularly if the two are at different airports. Same-airport connections at Tianfu are designed for this; cross-airport ones are not.

Allow more time than the journey alone requires. Check-in and security at peak hours are the variable, and the distance means there is no quick fix if you misjudge it.
For early morning departures, a pre-booked car is the reliable option. Metro and coach services do not run through the night, and late-night taxis are available but less predictable at that distance.
Set up mobile payment before leaving the airport if you have not already – it is the default for almost everything in the city. A local SIM or an eSIM arranged in advance makes this much easier.
There are left-luggage facilities at the airport, which is useful if you are transiting through Chengdu with several hours to spare and want to see something of the city.
A layover of six hours or more is enough for one thing in the city, but not two. Pick either the panda base if the timing suits an early morning, or a city neighbourhood with a meal.
Under four hours, stay near the airport or accept a short trip to one nearby district. The transfer eats most of what a short layover gives you.
