Chengdu is a good base for getting out. Dujiangyan and Mount Qingcheng is the classic trip, and both are feasible as long days rather than overnights.

Dujiangyan

• Location: About 1 hour by high-speed train.
• Highlights: Ancient irrigation system, UNESCO World Heritage Site.
• Activities: Explore the irrigation system, visit temples.

Dujiangyan and Mount Qingcheng is the standard choice and works as a single long day. Leave early, take water and snacks, and accept that you will be travelling for part of it.
