Beyond the Chengdu research base, two panda facilities in Sichuan are open to visitors: Wolong, in the mountains west of the city, and Bifengxia, near Ya’an. Both are further out and both are quieter, and the difference between them and the city base is the setting rather than the animals alone.

A reserve in the mountains, historically the most significant panda breeding and research centre in China. The setting is the point: forested hills, cooler air, and much larger enclosures than any city facility.
Fewer visitors, more space, and animals in a semi-mountain environment. The experience is closer to seeing pandas in something resembling their habitat, and the drive there is part of the day.
Distance. It is a long day from Chengdu and the road is mountain driving. Do not combine it with anything else.
A panda base near Ya’an, set in a gorge area that is itself a scenic attraction. It serves as a centre for panda rescue and reintroduction work.
Pandas plus a gorge landscape, which makes it a fuller day than the base alone. The combination of scenery and animals is what distinguishes it.
Access takes longer than the Chengdu base, and the scenic area means more walking if you want to see both parts.

If you have already been to the Chengdu base and want a different experience, Wolong is the stronger choice for the setting. Bifengxia suits visitors who want the pandas and a scenic area in the same day.
If you have not been to the Chengdu base, go there first. It has the most animals, the best viewing conditions and the shortest journey, and the others make more sense as a second visit.
Set off early. Both involve several hours of travel, and arriving late means quieter animals and a rushed visit.
Check access before you go. Mountain roads in Sichuan are affected by weather, particularly in summer, and opening arrangements at the reserves change.
Dress for altitude and changing conditions. Wolong in particular is considerably cooler than Chengdu, whatever the season.
