Zheduo Mountain Pass: What to Expect on the Road

Sichuan Travel Guidelao huang2026-10-28

Introduction

The Zheduo pass is the first major high crossing on the road west from Kangding, and it is where most travellers first properly feel the altitude of the Tibetan plateau. The road climbs in switchbacks, the views open out, and the temperature drops.

Knowing what to expect makes it a highlight rather than an uncomfortable surprise.

What the Crossing Involves

The road

A sustained climb with many switchbacks from Kangding, followed by a descent onto the plateau. The surface is generally good in season; the gradient and the hairpins are the issue rather than the road quality.

The altitude gain

Substantial, and gained quickly. This is the point at which visitors coming from Chengdu notice that they are no longer at low elevation.

The weather

Changeable and considerably colder than below. Snow is possible outside summer, and cloud and rain can arrive at any time of year.

What to Expect

Aspect What happens How to handle it
Altitude Shortness of breath, mild headache Ascend gradually, stop if unwell
Temperature Drops sharply at the top Have a layer accessible in the vehicle
Motion Switchbacks for a long stretch Take precautions if you are prone
Weather Can change within minutes Build slack into the day

At the Top

There is a viewing area, and on a clear day the view back over the mountains is the reason to stop. Prayer flags and the usual plateau stone piles mark the spot, and it is a popular place for a photograph.

Do not overexert at the top. Walking around at altitude after a rapid ascent is what makes people feel unwell; a short stop is fine, a climb up the surrounding slope is not.

It is cold and windy even in summer. Whatever the temperature was in Kangding, bring a layer.

Safety Notes

If you have heart, lung or other serious conditions, consult a doctor before travelling over high passes. Symptoms that worsen rather than settle need descent and medical attention.

In winter, check road conditions before setting out. Snow and ice make the crossing substantially harder, and closures happen.

Travel in daylight. The switchbacks and the weather both argue against doing the pass in the dark.

Practicalities

Most visitors cross as part of a longer drive rather than as a destination. There is no reason to make a special trip of the pass itself – it is the road to somewhere else.

Have water and something to eat in the vehicle. There is nothing at the top beyond the viewing area, and the drive is long.

Practical Notes

Item Detail
Road Switchbacks, good surface in season
At the top Cold, windy, short stop
Winter Check conditions before travelling
Timing Cross in daylight

Frequently Asked Questions

How high is the pass?

High enough that most people notice it. Treat it as a real altitude event.

Is the road dangerous?

Not in good conditions, but it is mountain driving with exposure and weather.

Can I stop at the top?

Yes, briefly. Do not climb around up there.

Is it passable in winter?

Usually, but check – snow and ice change the equation.
