The road north from Chengdu towards Jiuzhaigou passes through Wenchuan and Maoxian, and most travellers treat them as somewhere to drive through rather than stop. That is largely fair – but knowing what is there, and what the road is like, makes the journey better planned.
This guide covers the route: the driving, the worthwhile stops, and what to expect from the towns themselves.
A mountain road following a river valley north, climbing gradually. It is the standard approach to Jiuzhaigou by road and carries a lot of traffic in peak season.
Generally good in the main season, and affected by weather outside it. Rain in summer can cause delays and, occasionally, closures – check before setting out on a long drive.
Longer than the distance suggests. Mountain roads, traffic and stops all add up, and most visitors underestimate it.
| Town | Character | Worth stopping |
|---|---|---|
| Wenchuan | Rebuilt county town, Qiang heritage | For food or a break |
| Maoxian | Qiang county town on the route north | For the Qiang cultural sites nearby |
| The valleys between | River scenery, terraced slopes | For views from the road |
The region is home to Qiang communities, and there are villages and tower sites near the route that can be visited. They are the most interesting thing on this road, and they are worth planning a stop around.
The scenery along the route is genuinely good – steep valleys, terraced slopes, and a river that changes colour with the season. There are places to pull over and look.
The towns have local restaurants serving Sichuan cooking with a northern and highland character. Better than a service station, and worth planning lunch around.
Start early. The road is busy in the peak season and the journey is long enough that an early start makes a material difference to when you arrive.
Build in slack for delays. Weather and traffic both affect this route, and a schedule with no margin will be wrong at some point.
Consider breaking the journey. Driving straight through to Jiuzhaigou in one day is possible but long; an overnight part way is more comfortable and gives you the Qiang sites.
