Sichuan Weather by Month: What to Expect

Sichuan Travel Guidelao huang2026-10-43

Introduction

Sichuan’s weather is not one thing. The province spans a humid basin, temperate mountains and a cold high plateau, and what is happening in Chengdu tells you very little about what is happening in Daocheng Yading on the same day.

Planning around that split is the most useful thing a visitor can do.

Three Climates

The basin

Chengdu and the eastern lowlands: humid, frequently overcast, hot in summer and damp in winter. Rain is spread through the year, with the heaviest in the warmer months.

The mountains

The middle elevations – Emei, Qingcheng, the valleys west of Chengdu: cooler, wetter, with snow at the higher elevations in winter.

The plateau

Western Sichuan: cold, dry, sunny, with large daily temperature swings and weather that changes fast. Rainfall concentrates in summer.

Month by Month

Period Basin Plateau
Winter Damp, grey, cool Cold, dry, clear; some routes affected
Spring Mild, blossom, some rain Thaw, variable, roads recovering
Summer Hot, humid, afternoon storms Mild, green, most rain of the year
Autumn Mild, the clearest season Clear, cold nights, the best visibility

What This Means for Planning

One trip, two wardrobes

A trip combining Chengdu with the highlands needs clothing for both. The temperature difference between the basin and the plateau on the same day can be very large.

Season choice depends on destination

Autumn suits both. Summer is good for the plateau and uncomfortable in the basin. Spring is pleasant in the basin and unpredictable on the plateau.

Rain is seasonal in the west, spread in the east

Summer rain on the plateau is concentrated and heavy; in Chengdu it is frequent but often light. Both are manageable if you plan around them.

Practicalities

Check forecasts for the specific region, not for the province. A forecast for Chengdu is useless for planning a day at altitude three hundred kilometres west.

Build weather slack into any highland itinerary. Roads, viewpoints and walking routes are all affected, and a schedule with no margin will be wrong at some point.

Expect the plateau to be colder than you think, whatever the season. The combination of altitude, wind and clear skies means cold nights even in summer.

Practical Notes

Item Detail
Basin Humid year-round, hot summers
Plateau Cold nights, large daily swings
Best overall Autumn
Check Regional forecasts, not provincial

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best month to visit?

Autumn overall – clear on the plateau, comfortable in the basin. Spring is a reasonable second.

Does it rain all the time in Chengdu?

Not all the time, but often. It is grey and humid rather than constantly wet.

How cold is the plateau in summer?

Cold at night, mild in the sun. Layers are essential.

Is winter a bad time to go?

For the highlands, mostly yes. For Chengdu and the lowland sights, it is quiet and workable.
