Mugecuo is a high alpine lake in a forested valley near Kangding, and it is the easiest piece of highland scenery to reach from the town. The combination of water, forest and open grassland makes it a straightforward half-day or full-day trip for visitors based in Kangding.
It suits travellers who want plateau scenery without committing to a long drive.
A high-altitude lake set in forest, with walking around parts of the shore. The water and the surrounding slopes are the main subject, and the whole area is managed as a scenic zone with paths and facilities.
The valley contains conifer forest and open areas above the lake, which give a different character from the water itself. The walking between them is easy and well used.
High, though lower than the passes further west. It is enough to notice on arrival, particularly if you have come up from Kangding the same morning.
| Activity | Time | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Walk the lakeshore | An hour or more | Flat walking, easy going |
| Go up to the grassland | Two hours | Broader views over the valley |
| Photograph the water | Morning or late afternoon | Still water early |
| Take the boat, where available | Short | Season-dependent |
The trip is short enough to do as a half-day, and transport from the town is straightforward to arrange. Most visitors go with a hired vehicle for the day, which also allows stops on the way.
Going early is worth it: the light on the water is better in the morning and the afternoon brings more people and, often, more cloud.
The mildest season, with green forest and the most reliable access. It is also the busiest.
Colour in the forest and clearer light. Nights and mornings are cold.
Cold, with snow possible and some facilities reduced. The landscape is stark and there are far fewer visitors.
Dress in layers. The temperature at the lake is noticeably lower than in Kangding, and the weather changes quickly.
Carry water and food. Facilities in the scenic area are limited and the walking adds up.
Take it easy on arrival. The altitude is moderate compared with the high passes, but it is still enough to affect people who arrived from low elevation the same day.
