Mount Siguniang — the Four Girls Mountain — is Sichuan’s best serious mountain destination within reach of Chengdu, and it is underrated by international visitors relative to what it offers. Four peaks, three valleys, alpine scenery, and trekking that ranges from a gentle day walk to genuine mountaineering.
This guide covers what the mountain is, how the site is structured, and how it compares with the better-known destinations in the province.
A range of four connected peaks in the Aba region, with the highest being a serious mountaineering objective and the others forming a dramatic ridgeline. The surrounding area is protected as a scenic and nature area with three main valleys open to visitors.
The name refers to the four peaks, and the local Tibetan tradition behind it is part of the area’s cultural fabric. The highest peak is a genuine technical climb; the rest of the experience is trekking and scenery.
Visitors experience the mountain through its valleys, and each has a distinct character:
| Valley | Character | Demand | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| The closest valley | Easiest access, forest and meadow, peak views | Easy to moderate | All visitors, families |
| The middle valley | Longer, more varied, closer mountain views | Moderate to demanding | Regular walkers |
| The trekking valley | The serious multi-day route beneath the peaks | Demanding | Experienced trekkers |
This is the useful comparison, because it determines whether Siguniang belongs in your itinerary:
For travellers with limited time who want mountain scenery rather than lakes, Siguniang is arguably the best value destination in Sichuan. You can reach it in a fraction of the time Daocheng Yading takes, and the trekking is real without requiring expedition logistics.
The valley routes range from boardwalk day walks to multi-day treks that require equipment and, for the serious routes, a guide.
The accessible valleys give excellent day walking with peak views, forest, and meadow terrain. This is achievable for anyone reasonably fit and is the main experience for most visitors.
The longer valley routes and the high trekking beneath the peaks are genuine undertakings — multi-day, at altitude, and best done with a guide and proper equipment. See the dedicated hiking guide for route detail.
The highest peak is a technical climb that requires experience, equipment, and normally a guiding service. It is not a trekking objective and should not be treated as one.
The base settlement near the mountain entrance is the practical choice, with guesthouses and small hotels serving trekkers and domestic visitors. Staying there allows early starts, which matter for both light and crowds.
Camping is part of the experience on the multi-day trekking routes, and is normally arranged through a guiding service.
Siguniang is high but not extreme by Sichuan standards. Most visitors manage the valley walking without difficulty, though breathlessness on ascents is normal and pacing matters.
The multi-day trekking routes go higher and require more care. If you are travelling from Chengdu, spending a night at moderate altitude before arriving helps.
Completely different experiences. Jiuzhaigou is about lakes and waterfalls in forested valleys; Siguniang is about alpine peaks and mountain walking. They are not substitutes for each other, and both are excellent.
For the accessible day valleys, no. For the longer routes and anything involving camping, yes — and a guide is strongly advisable.
Two to three days covers the main valleys comfortably. Multi-day trekking routes need considerably longer.
Less than at the far-western destinations, but present. Valley walking is manageable for most people; the higher trekking routes require proper acclimatisation and pacing.
Realistically yes for the accessible valleys, which is a large part of the mountain’s appeal compared with destinations further west.
