Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong are close enough on the map that most visitors assume the transfer is trivial. It is not – the route crosses high country, and the journey takes a meaningful part of the day. Planning it properly is what makes the combination work.
This guide covers the routes between them, realistic timings, and how to sequence the two visits.
The road between the two crosses a mountain pass, and the driving is slow by the standards of the distance involved. Journeys that look short on a map take considerably longer in practice.
Good in the main season and affected by weather outside it. Snow and ice are a factor in the colder months, and summer rain can cause delays. Check conditions the day before.
The route climbs, and the high point is above both destinations. Anyone sensitive to altitude should be prepared for this rather than surprised by it.
| Option | Advantage | Drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Private car with driver | Flexible, door to door | Cost |
| Organised tour transport | Simple, no negotiation | Fixed schedule |
| Public coach | Cheapest | Infrequent and slow |
The usual and better order. Jiuzhaigou is lower, so it gives you a day or two to adjust before the higher climb at Huanglong. Most itineraries do this for that reason.
Works if your route approaches from that direction, but it means arriving at the altitude without having acclimatised at the lower valley first.
The most comfortable arrangement if you have the days. It avoids doing the transfer and a full visit in the same day.
Start early from your Jiuzhaigou base, travel to Huanglong, visit, and return the same day. It is a long day but a workable one, and it is what most visitors do.
Use the cable car at Huanglong. It removes a large part of the climb and makes the day realistic rather than punishing.
Do not try to add anything else. The transfer plus the visit is a full day, and adding a stop turns it into a rushed one.
Bring layers. The temperature at the pass and at Huanglong is considerably lower than in the valley, regardless of the season.
Carry water and something to eat. Options on the route are limited and the timings are unpredictable enough that you may be glad of them.
If you are prone to motion sickness, take precautions – the road climbs and descends with a lot of switchbacks.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Journey | Longer than the distance suggests |
| Best order | Jiuzhaigou first |
| Cable car | Use it at Huanglong |
| Check | Road conditions, especially outside summer |
Longer than most visitors expect. Allow a good part of the day.
Yes – most visitors do. Start early and use the cable car.
It is mountain driving with switchbacks, and weather affects it. Not dangerous in season, but slow.
Usually not necessary, though a night near Huanglong makes for a more relaxed two days.
