Daocheng Yading is the most demanding major destination in Sichuan and the one that rewards the most planning. Three days is the standard visit: one to arrive and adjust to the altitude, and two for the valley’s short and long routes.
Altitude governs everything here. Getting the sequencing right matters more than any other decision you make about the trip.
The elevation here is high enough that arriving and immediately walking is a mistake. The first day should be gentle: arrival, accommodation, food, rest. Most visitors feel something on day one regardless of fitness.
The shorter of the two valley routes, which covers the main meadow and the first lake. It is the natural way to test how the altitude affects you before committing to the longer day.
The higher lakes and the longer walk. Doing it on the third day means two nights of adjustment beforehand, which is what makes it manageable.
| Route | Distance character | Difficulty | What you see |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short route | Shorter, with boardwalks | Moderate at altitude | Meadow and the first lake |
| Long route | Longer, sustained climb | Demanding | The higher lakes and the peaks |
This is the main variable and the reason three days is the minimum. Symptoms of mild altitude discomfort – headache, poor appetite, broken sleep – are common and usually settle with rest.
Worsening breathlessness at rest, confusion or a persistent cough needs medical attention rather than more rest. Anyone with heart, lung or other serious conditions should consult a doctor before travelling. This is general information, not medical advice.
Walk slowly and steadily. The temptation is to push on the flat sections and pay for it on the climbs; the people who do best here are the ones who never get out of breath.
Carry water and food. Options inside the valley are limited, and the days are long.
Build in the option to turn back. Weather changes quickly at this altitude, and the long route is not worth finishing in deteriorating conditions.
Most visitors arrive over two or three days from Chengdu, which doubles as acclimatisation, or fly into Daocheng Yading Airport and adjust on arrival. The flight saves time and costs you adaptation.
Accommodation is in Shangri-La Town outside the reserve, or in the village inside it. The town is at a lower elevation, which suits adjustment; the village saves travel time each morning.

Only by skipping the adjustment day, which is the day that makes the other two work.
The long route, substantially. Do it last.
Variable. Most people manage with rest and pacing; a minority struggle and should descend.
Possibly, with a doctor’s advice beforehand and a conservative pace. The altitude is the constraint, not the distance alone.
