The best time to visit Sichuan depends on where in the province you are going, because the basin and the plateau have different optimum seasons. For most itineraries – Chengdu plus a couple of the major sights – autumn is the answer.
What follows breaks the decision down by region and by what you want to see.
The best overall. Clear skies on the plateau, comfortable temperatures in the basin, and the autumn colour that Jiuzhaigou, Miyaluo and Guangwu are known for. It is also the busiest season and the most expensive.
A good second choice. Blossom in the lowlands, green returning to the mountains, and fewer people than autumn. Weather on the plateau is less settled.
The only practical season for some highland areas, and the best for water levels at Jiuzhaigou. In the basin it is hot and humid. Expect rain.
Quiet and cheap in the basin, with short days and damp cold. On the plateau it is genuinely cold, and some routes and facilities close.
| Region | Best season | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Chengdu and the basin | Spring or autumn | Mild and comfortable |
| Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong | Autumn for colour, summer for water | The two peak reasons to go |
| Western Sichuan plateau | Summer and autumn | Accessible, clearest |
| Southern Sichuan | Spring to autumn | Mild, green |
The national public holidays. They fall partly in spring and autumn, and they distort prices, transport availability and crowd levels across the whole province. Check the dates before fixing your travel.
The peak weeks at Jiuzhaigou if you dislike crowds. The autumn colour season there is extraordinary and extremely busy; the shoulder weeks either side are a reasonable compromise.
The weeks either side of the autumn peak give most of the benefit at a fraction of the crowd. This is the best value in the province for visitors with flexible dates.
Late spring works similarly – the weather is mostly settled, the crowds have not arrived, and the highland roads are open after winter.

October for most of the province, though the autumn colour timing varies year to year.
Nearly. Less reliable weather on the plateau, fewer crowds everywhere.
The basin, yes. The highlands are cold and some access closes.
Early – accommodation at the popular scenic areas fills well in advance.
